Mount Kenya hotels and tours

Welcome to Mount Kenya!

The Mount Kenya region, otherwise known as the Central Highlands, is a vast and incredibly beautiful area to the north of Nairobi. It boasts of diverse forests, free flowing rivers, grassy plateaux and wildlife reserves, and is home to the majestic Mount Kenya from which the country gets its name. The Aberdare ranges, the Laikipia plateau and Embu-Meru form part of the Central Highlands while Samburu and Mathews ranges border it to the north. Treetop Mount Kenya hotels, eco-lodges and even private ranches welcome tourists who flock here looking for fun and adventure. Among the highlights are safaris, fishing, trekking, camping, climbing and wildlife spotting. Find your ideal Mount Kenya hotel and plan this exciting adventure from today!

A spectacular snow-capped mountain that towers over the landscape, Mount Kenya is Central Highlands’ biggest draw.

The region has an interesting history. It’s pleasant climate and fertile lands attracted a lot of European settlers during the colonial days. They set up farms and plantations all around and the area even came to be known as ‘White Highlands’. But it soon became the epicentre of pre-independence struggles against the British occupiers, spearheaded by the Kikuyu people, the original dwellers of the highlands. After independence much of the land was redistributed among the Kikuyus for whom Mount Kenya is sacred (it is believed to be the dwelling place of their god Ngai). Still intensely cultivated, the highlands produce some of the finest coffee in the world.

There are a number of small but attractive towns in the Mount Kenya region including Nyeri, Nanyuki, Meru, Embu, Nyahururu, Naro Moru and Isiolo. Find out where you can stay by visiting our Mount Kenya hotels page. These towns, however, do not offer many distractions. For visitors they are just good starting points for Mount Kenya tours to the real attractions – Mount Kenya, Aberdare National Park and the Meru National Park.

The locations of all the hotels in Mount Kenya available can be seen at our Mount Kenya map. A range of Mount Kenya tours available for online booking can also be checked out.

The peaks of Mount Kenya rise up sharply from the lush rainforests, moors and bamboo thickets below. The varied vegetation supports exotic wildlife and numerous bird species. For many visitors, treks to the summit of Point Lenana, the most accessible of the peaks, are the best part of a Central Highlands trip. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking on clear days. Find out in detail what the breathtaking things to see and do in Mount Kenya are.

Aberdare National Park (Princess Elizabeth was visiting the park when she became queen) boasts lush rainforests, 4000 m peaks, stunning waterfalls, misty moors, and amazing wildlife including leopards, lions, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes. The park also offers terrific trekking trails. The Meru National Park, to the east of Mount Kenya, is a bit isolated and hence less crowded. But you’ll find on a Mount Kenya tour here that its pristine wilderness and animal life make it more captivating than most other protected areas in Kenya.

While the tours in Mount Kenya provides many memorable experiences, a visit to a tea or coffee plantation and leisurely drives along the mountain roads can be fun and memorable. Get out the door of your Mount Kenya hotel, pack your camera, binoculars and hiking boots and take off on an enjoyable Mount Kenya tour into Kenya’s heartland.
